Overview

How spearfishing is treated at Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park.

No-take marine reserve (first no-take reserve in the wider Caribbean, designated 1986). No fishing, conching, shelling, lobstering or spearfishing; nothing living or dead may be removed. Enforced by Bahamas National Trust with fines and vessel confiscation.

License requiredvia Department of Marine Resources (Department of Fisheries), Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources

Apply to the Minister/Director of Fisheries (Form 7); for vessels entering The Bahamas, application is made to the customs officer at the first Port of Entry. To use a spear, the applicant must request this on the permit application; when granted, the spear use is endorsed in writing on the permit by the issuing officer.
