What this zone is

Overview

How spearfishing is treated at Palau National Marine Sanctuary - No-Take Zone (80% of EEZ).

Under the Palau National Marine Sanctuary Act (RPPL No. 9-49 of 2015), approximately 80% of Palau's exclusive economic zone (about 500,000 km2) is a fully protected no-take area from which all extractive activities are prohibited (fully in force from 2020). The remaining 20% is a Domestic Fishing Zone. This is an offshore/EEZ measure rather than a coastal spearfishing rule.
