Overview

How spearfishing is treated at French Polynesia lagoons and reefs (general).

Recreational spearfishing is permitted across most lagoons and reefs of the territory subject to Deliberation 88-183 AT (Title III) and species protections, outside marine protected areas, rahui reserves and other closed zones. No recreational licence is required.

No scuba/hookah while spearfishing (Art. 9-10); speargun may not be kept loaded out of the water; keep 150 m from water intakes, marine farms and marked gear (Art. 8); respect protected species and minimum sizes.
